Application and problem

An inspection machine gauges machined parts: bore, journal and height, passage and face run-out, groove width, concentricity, wall thickness and depth.

The operator needs a live reading and a pass or fail verdict for each parameter, plus mastering, trends and reports, from a controller and software that work as one system.

Constraints

What the design had to accommodate, as recorded for the project.

  • A pass or fail verdict for each gauged parameter, visible while the machine runs
  • Parameter set-up, configuration and reporting specific to this machine
  • Live monitoring, diagnostics and trends from the same controller that runs the machine sequence

Our scope

  • Customised PLC hardware
  • Control firmware for the machine sequence and the verdicts
  • .NET operator dashboards: parameters, mastering, bore trends and reports

Engineering decisions

Design choices recorded for this project, and what each one provides.

Design choiceWhat it provides
Hardware, control logic and software from one teamThe PLC, its firmware and the operator screens were engineered together by the same team.
.NET for the operator dashboardsUsed here; other software stacks are possible on other projects.
Verdict lamps per parameterThe parameters screen shows each measurement with its own pass or fail lamp.

Documented outcome

Deployed in India.
